Roohan Family Donates 189 acres of land in Town of Greenfield to Skidmore College

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (May 30, 2017)– Michael and Margarate Roohan, owners of Granite & Marble Works in Wilton, N.Y., have donated to Skidmore a land tract of 189 acres in the Town of Greenfield.

The donation made on December 27 is adjacent to land tracts of 200 acres donated by the couple in 2010, and nearly 120 neighboring acres donated in 2014. All parcels are undeveloped woodland in Greenfield, located near Skidmore College's North Woods property that lies behind the College's Van Lennep Riding Center.

Mike Roohan explains, "We feel strongly about supporting Skidmore College. Its people and programs add so much to the quality of life in Saratoga Springs, and we are very pleased to have the opportunity to give back to the College.

In making their earlier land donation, the Roohans had explained, "Skidmore's creative, multidisciplinary approach to using this land for teaching, research, and recreation assures the most valuable use for the greatest number of participants, and mostly importantly assures the education of future generations in the care of our natural surroundings."

Few northeastern colleges have woodlands as large and as near to campus as Skidmore's notes President Philip A. Glotzbach, adding that the gifts are highly valued by the college "and will be of great interest to our faculty and students."

Skidmore woodlands have been used for research and classroom learning in disciplines ranging from environmental studies and sciences to anthropology to American studies. The college is currently working on a sustainable stewardship plan for all of its underdeveloped land.

  • The knowledge and craftsmanship of the sales, fabrication and installation teams was nothing short of amazing. This job was small by any standard, except my own. They acted like it was their own bathroom, in their own house. Thank you Margaret, Mike, Jeff, George and everyone else who worked to make my bathroom renovation perfect!

  • I liked that this is a family owned business and the owners are involved in the day to day operations. They have a fantastic selection of granites and the prices are clearly marked making staying within your budget simple. The installers are very personable and prompt.

  • Everybody I worked with at this company was professional, skilled, experienced, and remarkably helpful.  They provided everything I needed, and went well beyond what other suppliers were willing to do for my project.  Everything came out great.  I would definitely use them again and have already recommended them to several friends.

  • The selection of materials was very extensive. We had an accompanied tour of all of the stone in stock. Pieces are hand selected from all over the world. Price for the quality was more than fair. Only shop regionally where we could find an assortment of marble as well as granite. Would highly recommend.
